The 74-day test

Test on day 1. Retest on day 74.

A home sperm test now, Motily's daily check-in for the 74 days it takes to make new sperm, then a second test to see what changed.

One cycle of sperm production takes roughly 74 days, so a semen test now and a second one from day 74 show what those 74 days looked like. The plan: take a home sperm test on day 1, use Motily's two-minute daily check-in for the 74 days in between, then retest under the same conditions and compare the two results in the app. Motily doesn't make the test. How it works

  1. Day 1: test. Order the 2-test kit and take test one. ExSeed's phone-connected device gives volume, concentration, motility and total motile sperm count.
  2. Days 1 to 74: the daily check-in. Add your ExSeed report to Motily's Analysis tab, where each result is shown against the WHO 2021 reference limits. Then log the eight habits research links to sperm health, two minutes a day.
  3. From day 74: retest. Take test two under the same conditions as the first, and Motily shows the two results side by side.

Why 74 days?

One cycle of sperm production takes roughly 74 days, a figure from Heller and Clermont's 1964 tracer study, and sperm then spend about one to two more weeks in the epididymis. So a test today reflects sperm that started forming more than two months ago, and the UK's NICE guideline has clinics repeat an abnormal semen analysis about three months after the first for the same reason. The how long it takes guide covers the evidence, and the 74-day timeline turns your start date into dates.

Retesting doesn't promise a different number. Results vary from test to test in the same man, which is why one test is never the verdict and why the second test is worth taking whichever way the first one went.

What the test measures

  • What: semen volume, sperm concentration, motility (progressive) and total motile sperm count. No morphology; only a lab analysis measures that.
  • How: a phone-connected microscope device. The sample rests for 20 minutes, then the result takes about 15 minutes, and ExSeed says every completed test is reviewed by one of its fertility experts.
  • Certification: ExSeed describes the analysis device as CE certified.
  • Where: ExSeed delivers to the UK and EU.

Checked against ExSeed's product page on 8 October 2026. A home test measures less than a clinic or lab semen analysis; the UK sperm test guide covers the NHS and private routes.

Before your retest

  • Match the abstinence window: the WHO manual asks for 2 to 7 days without ejaculating, so use the same number of days both times.
  • Test at the same time of day as the first test.
  • Note any fever or illness in the three months before, and mention it to whoever reads the result.
  • The when to retest guide has the full checklist.

Questions

Is this a Motily test?

No. It's ExSeed's kit, made and sold by ExSeed. Motily is the free app you use between the two tests.

Does Motily earn from this?

Yes. The kit link and code MOTILY are affiliate, so Motily earns a commission if you buy through either, at no extra cost to you.

Is it a diagnosis?

No. A home test is a measurement, not a diagnosis. NICE advises seeing a GP after a year of trying, or sooner if the woman is 36 or over or either of you knows of a possible fertility problem.

When should I retest?

From day 74. NICE says an abnormal first result should be repeated, ideally about three months after the first test.

Which kit should I get?

The 2-test kit covers day 1 and day 74. ExSeed also sells larger kits if you want spare tests.
